About the Author

Earnest James Hinkle

Born August 20, 1959, in the state of Mississippi. Raised in the country, Ernest enjoyed hunting, ran track, and played football in high school. He served three years in the military and earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.

He served 33 years in law enforcement, working in county jails and state prisons. Through decades of talking with incarcerated men, most of whom couldn't recall a single meaningful conversation with their fathers, he discovered the mission that would become this book.

Today, Earnest loves jogging, pumping iron, coaching baseball, working with youth, gardening, and creating something beautiful out of something ugly. He believes education is the key to everything and that learning from somebody else's mistakes is better than learning from your own.

Grow

From self-respect to finances, from peer pressure to health — 52 chapters cover the real-world topics every child will face, long before they reach the point of crisis.

Raise

Old heads passing down wisdom and knowledge so the young head won't have the same up Hill to climb, or a least be better equipped to climb.

The Inspiration

Growing up in rural Mississippi in the '60s and '70s, Earnest saw a repeated cycle: families academically challenged, teenagers dropping out, young men going to prison as if they were going to school.

After 35 years inside county jails and state prisons, he came to a conclusion: the root causes were absent fathers, lack of early academic intervention, and parents who simply didn't know what conversations to have.

"I believe I have nailed it. Proper preparation prevents poor performance."

"5-P's-2-Raising a Child understand the importance of giving back to the community, particularly during the holiday season. However, "handouts" alone only serve to leave an already underserved community, facing political, social, and economic challenges, stagnant and complacent.

The 5-P's-2-Raising a Child is dedicated to building strong communities through education about life, knowledge, awareness, development, and preparation.

Let's start giving our communities something that will help develop and strengthen them so that the next generation won't need "handouts."

Let's add a book to what we are giving."
